Shiels set to leave role as Northern Ireland boss

Breaking news

Kenny Shiels is set to leave his role as manager of Northern Ireland women’s team, BBC Sport NI understands.

Shiels took over as boss in May 2019 and led the team to last summer’s European Championship finals in England, their first-ever tournament.

However, the former Kilmarnock and Derry City boss was unable to secure qualification for this year’s World Cup.

Shiels had signed a two-year contract extension in April 2021.

In August, he reiterated his desire to continue as boss when asked if he could see himself in charge for the upcoming Euro 2025 qualifying campaign.

Shiels, who has also managed Ballymena United and Larne in the Irish Premiership, succeeded Alfie Wylie in 2019 and oversaw a dramatic improvement in Northern Ireland’s fortunes.

They reached the European Championship finals after finishing second behind Norway in qualifying before overcoming Ukraine in a play-off.

At last year’s finals in England, Northern Ireland bowed out at the group stage following defeats by Norway, Austria and the hosts.
