Euro 2024 qualifiers today – your guide to Sunday’s matches

The Euro 2024 qualification campaign is up and running, with the second round of matches getting underway this weekend.

Sunday’s games feature big games group favourites and some cases of David vs Goliath that only international qualifiers can provide.

Here’s all you need to know about them.

England made a perfect start to Euro 2024 qualifying, beating Italy 2-1 in Naples courtesy of goals from Declan Rice and Harry Kane.

Ukraine look likely to be their biggest threat asides from the Italians, and will be hoping to kick their qualification campaign off with their first win over the Three Lions since 2009.

On paper, at least Malta will be the whipping boys of Group C, so the Azzurri will be looking to get as many goals as possible.

The Atalanta man will fancy his chances of adding to his tally again against Kazakhstan, who lost their opening match 2-1 to Slovenia after going 1-0 up but have shown they’re no pushovers with two wins over Slovakia in the last year.

San Marino put up a fight against Northern Ireland last time out, only losing 2-0 and even getting the ball into the back of the net, although the offside flag ruined their fun.

Slovenia will be hoping to do away with the minnows with less trouble and make it two wins from two games following their victory against Kazakhstan.

Michael O’Neill’s Northern Ireland will host Finland in the first home game of the manager’s second spell. Fortunately, there is little danger of O’Neill getting overawed on his return to Windsor Park as, by his own admission, he is “quite an unemotional person”. Chilling.

Dion Charles found the net against San Marino on either side of half time as O’Neill returned to the helm with a win while Finland – a nation that has had Markku Kanerva in charge since 2016 – kicked off their European Championship qualifying campaign with a 3-1 loss to Denmark on Thursday.

Two of the smallest nations bidding to reach Germany in 2024 meet on Sunday afternoon when Liechtenstein host Iceland.

As every commentator between 2016 and 2018 felt compelled to inform their viewers, Iceland’s population of 370,000 (it’s the size of Leicester don’t you know) is meagre. Yet, it is roughly ten times larger than that of Liechtenstein.

Luxembourg host frequent tormentors Portugal on Sunday evening in the midst of an encouraging run of form.

Luca Holtz’s side held Slovakia to a goalless stalemate in their opening qualifier, extending the nation’s unbeaten run to six matches.

However, Luxembourg have not avoided defeat against Portugal since Carlo Weis scored the only goal of his 88-cap long international career to earn a 1-1 draw against a side boasting Luis Figo, Paulo Futre and Vitor Baia in 1991. Portugal have conceded just two goals in this fixture since, winning all 12 meetings in the 21st century.

Two recently appointed managers meet as Slovakia host Bosnia & Herzegovina on Sunday night.

Francesco Calzona, Maurizio Sarri’s long-time former assistant manager, is yet to win a game since taking over Slovakia in July.
