Khadija Shaw’s 89th-minute winner against Brighton makes Man City history

Khadija Shaw’s 89th-minute winner in Manchester City’s victory over Brighton makes her the club’s highest-scoring player in a season.

Shaw, who is the current WSL top-scorer with 15 goals, netted a brace to put City level on points with second-placed rivals Manchester United, who suffered a loss to Chelsea earlier in the day.

The Jamaican has now scored 26 goals in 22 games this season, a new record for Manchester City

The record was previously held by Nikita Parris, who scored 24 goals in the 2018/19 season.

City are now unbeaten in 13 WSL games and the late goal could certainly boost the confidence of Gareth Taylor’s side, who will face the tough task of playing Chelsea in two weeks’ time.

Upon joining the club in 2021, Shaw often saw the bench behind former England international Ellen White. But since White’s retirement, Shaw has blossomed into City’s main goal scoring threat.

“Obviously Ellen was an incredible personality, I’ve definitely learned a lot and taken pieces of her game,” said Shaw in a previous interview.

“I’ve always been scoring goals, but I’ve always tried to stay grounded. Coming into this year, I’ve tried to add my strengths to the City way of playing.

“It’s tough, challenging, we want to show our class. The team look to me to score goals, and it’s important to do it in games.”

Up next, Manchester City will play Aston Villa in the quarter-final of the FA Cup before continuing their WSL campaign against league leaders Chelsea.
