La Liga president responds to Barcelona’s calls for his resignation

La Liga president Javier Tebas has hit back at Catalonia-based newspaper La Vanguardia following its report accusing him and the league of presenting false evidence against Barcelona as part of the ongoing Negreira case.

Barcelona were hit with corruption charges over payments made between 2001 and 2018 to a company owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, former vice-president of Spanish football’s refereeing committee, allegedly in exchange for reports on how to behave in front of certain referees.

La Vanguardia reported that Tebas submitted false evidence during the investigation relating to an incriminating document. Barcelona then responded to the publication’s report by calling on the president of the league to resign in a lengthy statement on Monday.

The club went on to suggest it has been the victim of a ‘media campaign for events that never took place’, insisting they have never paid referees and labelling it ‘harassment’.

Tebas’ response to La Vanguardia is a demand for a visible ‘rectification’ to their story within a matter of days, denying the claims of the original article regarding the submission of evidence.

“Before presenting the letter to the Prosecutor’s Office, La Liga’s legal counsel informed the Delegate Commission on February 21 of the content of the letter and its documents,” Tebas revealed. “Right of rectification requested from La Vanguardia.”

In response to Barcelona, Tebas added: “Clarified, and what about you?”.

Tebas has threatened legal action against the publication should it fail to comply.
