Leeds United are close to finalising a deal to sign Maximilian Wober from Red Bull Salzburg, 90min understands.
Jesse Marsch first brought Wober to Salzburg back in 2019 on a €12m deal from Sevilla, and the centre-back has gone on to win three Austrian Bundesliga titles at the heart of their defence.
Sources have told 90min that Wober is set to undergo a medical with Leeds ahead of a transfer worth roughly £14m.
Leeds have one of the Premier League’s worst defensive records this season, while only 20th-placed Norwich City shipped more than them last term.
The Whites once again find themselves embroiled in a relegation battle this year, winning just four of their opening 15 games so far this season.
They opted to only bring in one new defender prior to the 2022/23 campaign – Denmark right-back Rasmus Kristensen, who also arrived from Salzburg having previously worked under Marsch in Austria.
Leeds will be hoping Wober, who also spent one-and-a-half years at Ajax earlier in his career, will help them become a tougher defensive outfit.
Wober has been capped 13 times by Austria, though was not called into their 26-player Euro 2020 squad last summer.
He’s played 21 times for Salzburg this season, including three appearances in the Champions League.
