THE RESULTS AUSTRALIA WANTS ON FRIDAY

Before their decisive clash with Paraguay (12pm AEST), the Socceroos will learn more about their chances of advancing with a loss.

Heading into Friday, they were given an estimated 91% chance of making the knockout stage – 100% with a win or draw, and 80% with a loss. But that could change dramatically when Group E and Group F play their final games this morning.

Group E (6am): Australia doesn’t want to see Ecuador or Curacao, who are currently on 1 point each, record upset wins over Germany or Cote d’Ivoire respectively.

A win for either Ecuador or Curacao would cut the Socceroos’ overall chances of advancing to around 85% (and around 67% with a loss to Paraguay). Wins for both Germany and Cote d’Ivoire would boost the Socceroos’ chances to 94% (and 86% with a loss to Paraguay) given it would eliminate a third-placer.

Germany, locked in as the Group E winner before Friday’s games, is the opponent for third place in Group D (Australia or Paraguay) in 94% of advancement scenarios.

Group F (9am): The only relevant result would be Japan winning by as much as possible over Sweden, who are currently even with Australia on 3 points with an even goal difference, but with more goals scored (the secondary tiebreaker).

Sweden winning would have a very minor negative impact on the Socceroos.
