The Premier League is regarded by many as the best league in the world, but it is crazy to think that an English manager has never actually won it.

Of course, England has produced some truly exceptional managers in years gone by such as Brian Clough and Bob Paisley. However, we are solely focusing on the Premier League era here.

With the way Eddie Howe is going at Newcastle, he might make his way onto this list sooner than later. We’ve scrolled back through the years and picked out the 11 highest Premier League point tallies achieved by English managers.

=10. Harry Redknapp (Tottenham 2009-10) – 70 points

Considering Redknapp had taken over at Spurs when they were bottom of the table in the 2008-09 season, he did a bloody good job to propel them up the league the following year.

With Redknapp’s usual suspects of Niko Kranjcar, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe making up the spine of the squad, they finished fourth in the league and qualified for the Champions League in the process.

=10. Howard Wilkinson (Leeds 1993-94) – 70 points

Leeds missed out on Europe by a single point in 1994 as Arsenal snuck ahead of them with 71 points. Wilkinson and his side didn’t take that setback lightly though as they bettered their points tally of 70 in the following season.

=8. Roy Evans (Liverpool 1995-96) – 71 points

Robbie Fowler was at his prolific best during the mid-90s and his 25 league goals helped Liverpool accumulate 71 points in 1995-96. Managed by Evans, Liverpool marched on to a fourth-placed finish in 1996.

=8. Bobby Robson (Newcastle 2001-02) – 71 points

Sir Bobby Robson’s Newcastle side of the early 2000s were a joy to watch. With the likes of Craig Bellamy, Jermaine Jenas and Kieron Dyer playing the best football of their careers, there was rarely a dull moment.

Alan Shearer returned to his goalscoring best this season too after an injury setback in the previous campaign. The forward scored 23 league goals in this campaign and helped his side accumulate 71 points to finish fourth.

7. Kevin Keegan (Newcastle 1994-95) – 72 points

Newcastle’s tally of 72 points was only enough to secure a sixth-placed finish back in 1995. Of course, more points were available to each side during this season as there were 22 teams competing in the league.

6. Howard Wilkinson (Leeds 1994-95) – 73 points

Fuelled on by the previous season when they racked up 70 points, Wilkinson’s side were even more impressive this time around. With 73 points to their name, this was Leeds’ highest-ever point tally achieved in the Premier League era.

The competition in the league was especially high during this season though as 73 points was only enough to secure a fifth-place finish.

=4. Ron Atkinson (Aston Villa 1992-93) – 74 points

Only Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United picked up more points than Atkinson’s Aston Villa side in the 1992-93 campaign. Perhaps talk of a potential title got to the Villa squad in the end as they only won three of their last eight matches.

In the end, they finished 10 points shy of United that season, but Villa’s second-place finish was still a vast improvement on their previous campaigns.

=4. Roy Evans (Liverpool 1994-95) – 74 points

Having finished outside of the top four in their previous three campaigns leading up to the 1994-95 season, Liverpool were in need of an injection of quality.

Evans had taken over halfway through Liverpool’s previous campaign, but he properly got his feet under the table during his first full season in charge.

=2. Frank Clark (Nottingham Forest 1994-95) – 77 points

Under Clark, Forest started and ended the 1994-95 campaign like a house on fire. Had it not been for a mid-season blip, they could have even rivalled Blackburn for the title that year.

Forest managed to accumulate a total of 77 points, which is their best-ever return in the Premier League era.

1. Kevin Keegan (Newcastle 1995-96) – 78 points

The 1995-96 Premier League season had just about everything. Drama, goals galore and more. Newcastle went head to head with Manchester United for the title and the season climaxed with one of the most enthralling title races we have ever seen.

Keegan’s famous post-match interview after beating Leeds will live long in the memory for all of us. Newcastle ended up finishing four points shy of their title rivals with 78 points.
